Family History

John Henry Upton was born in 1883 at East Bridgford and was the son of Herbert Upton a farm labourer and the late Harriet Upton née Richards of East Bridgford. His father Herbert was born in 1857 at East Bridgford and his mother Harriett Richards was born in 1860 at Plunger, they were married in 1883 their marriage was recorded in the Bingham Registration district, they went on to have the following children, John Henry b1883, Fred b1887, William b1888, Edith b1890, Charles 1892, Walter 1894, Leonard b1895, Beatrice b1899 and Arthur b1900, all were born at East Bridgford. His mother Harriett died in 1903 at East Bridgford she was 43 yrs old. In the 1911 census his widow father is still living at East Bridgford, he is shown as a being 54 yrs a farm labourer, he is living with his sons Leonard 16 yrs a farm labourer and Arthur 11 yrs a scholar.

Military History

Pte. John Henry Upton, enlisted at Nottingham and served with the 3rd Battalion Grenadier Guards, he landed in France on 20th October 1915 and was killed in action on 22nd November 1915. He is buried in the Royal Irish Rifles Graveyard, Laventie.
